On Sunday, the Bangladeshi cricketer Arafat Sunny (30) was taken into custody by Bangladesh police after his girlfriend alleged that he posted some sensitive photos of her on the social media networks.
Police chief Jamaluddin Mir said that Arafat’s house in Aminbazar was raided by the police after his longtime girlfriend made a complaint two weeks back.
Jamaluddin told AFP,
“She said Sunny opened up a fake Facebook account of hers and posted their personal photos, which she found offensive and defamatory. We have arrested him and sent him to the court, seeking to take him into custody for five days for questioning.”
The internet rules in Bangladesh are very strict and if Arafat is found guilty, he may be sent to jail for 14 years or a fine of 10 million taka ($126,340) will be imposed on him.
There has been no reaction from the cricketer as of now.
Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the chief executive of Bangladesh Cricket Board, told AFP,
“It seems to be a personal matter. We don’t want to comment now, however, we are observing (the situation).”
Arafat is a left arm spinner who has represented Bangladesh in 16 ODIs, took 24 wickets as well as in 10 T20s and took 12 wickets. However, he is facing suspension at international level due to his illegal bowling action and since then, he has been playing only in domestic tournaments for Dhaka Metropolis.
This is the third time that any national level cricketer has been jailed in recent times; earlier Rubel Hossain and Shahadat Hossain have also been detained.
Rubel was sent to jail in 2015 as he was booked under a rape charge which was alleged by an actress who also claimed to be his fiancé. However, he got bail later to play in 2015 World Cup and the charges were also withdrawn by the lady.
Shahadat was in jail for two months last year as he and his wife were taken into custody by the police under the charges of torturing 11 yrs old girl who was working as a maid in their house. The court later acquitted the couple.
