We all must have heard many “Rags to Riches” stories; they are in fact very common these days. We might see some autowallahs struggling hard to make their sons/daughters an IAS officer, or may be a sabziwali working day and night so as to give proper education to her child, isn’t it? With cricketers, such struggles are very common. The latest example is that of M.S Dhoni; have you watched the biopic in which his entire life changed from poverty to fame? I am sure you must be highly inspired by this. We had even covered an article in which the “Then & Now” homes of famous players were shown; all this gave a lot of goosebumps.

Achieving success is not at all easy; it needs efforts, struggles and immense hard work. Same is the case with Thangarasu Natarajan, the left arm fast bowler from Tamil Nadu team. It is not a common rags to riches story that we are going to narrate; indeed his story is one of the most inspirational ones and if you are a die-hard cricket fan, probably some tears might roll down your cheeks.

Today, at the IPL auction in Bangalore, Natarajan was sold to Kings XI Punjab for a whopping Rs 3 crores! You might be thinking “So what?”. Well, his story makes a great difference because few years back their family might have not even dreamed of a lakh or two. Yes, such was the condition of his family, POOR, DOWN TO EARTH & leading a HAND TO MOUTH existence. His base price was Rs 10 lakhs, but he got sold for 30 times the price.

Let’s delve deep into his past!

Natarajan comes from a very poor background; hardships were common for the family. His dad works as a coolie at the railway station and merely earns Rs 500 per day i.e. Rs 15,000 a month. On the other hand, his mom sells meat at a street side stall. They hail from Salem and struggled hard to fulfill their basic necessities. Being the eldest of 5 siblings, he had loads of responsibilities and it was obvious, he couldn’t run away from those.

How it started?

Well, Natarajan always loved to play cricket and would enjoy it to the fullest. Just like other players, even he had the hobby of collecting cups. One surprising thing is that in his village, he won cups by playing cricket with “Tennis ball”; yes, you heard that right. He didn’t want to disclose about this to his parents and hence, carried on with whatever he got. Natarajan used to play the game just for fun, but who knew, he will be sold for Rs 3 crores. He never ever dreamed of becoming a professional cricketer. You won’t believe this, but Natarajan had never even seen a cricket ground.

How his life changed?

It was A Jayaprakash, a cricketer from the 4th division of Chennai who noticed Natarajan’s love for cricket. He was so happy on seeing his performances that he took Natarajan under him. Jayaprakash told Natarajan’s parents that he will take his complete responsibility and also convinced them how much he loves cricket. Then, Natarajan came to Chennai along with Jayaprakash and stayed in his club.

His milestones

2010-2011: After moving to Chennai, he played for TNCA i.e. Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s 4th division and represented BSNL

2012- 2013: He played for the 1st division league of TNCA. Then, he played for Vijay.

2014: He played for Jolly Rovers. There he fielded for biggies Murali Vijay and R Ashwin.

2016: He made Ranji debut at Eden Gardens against Bengal

Things were going smoothly, but later, he had a bad episode in life too, just as everyone does. Someone reported him for a suspect action; soon that was solved and he once again maintained a strong pace. He won hearts of everyone by bowling 6 yorkers in a super-over in the Tamil Nadu Premier League match which was being played against Tuti Patriots. He is an integral part of the bowling department and no one will forget him.

Such is the story of T Natarajan! Can you imagine the amount of hard work it has taken for him to reach such a level? Today, he is one of the most renowned bowlers and has signed a Rs 3 crores deal with IPL!

Way to go Natarajan….we love you…All the best for your bright future!
