The self-proclaimed Godman Asaram Bapu has been convicted by the Jodhpur Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe Court in a case in which he was accused for rape. Asaram was arrested in 2013 and it has been nearly five years now when he is convicted and he may get imprisonment up to 10 years. Considering the security aspects, the decision was taken to pronounce the judgment in Jodhpur Central Jail.
The charges under which Asaram was booked are sexual harassment of a minor girl, raping minor girl, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.
Asaram is facing trial in two cases of sexual assault and abuse – one in Rajasthan and second in Gujarat.
Six followers of Asaram were taken into custody before the court give judgment. The administration has also increased the security around the house of the victim as there are chances that the followers of Asaram may get violent if decision is against their wishes. Sec 144 has been imposed in Jodhpur which makes assembling of more than 4 people at one place illegal.
12 bail applications of Asaram have been rejected by the Rajasthan HC and the Supreme Court.
The case was filed by a minor girl from Shahajahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, who alleged that she was raped by Asaram on 15th Aug, 2013, in his ashram at Manai village near Jodhpur. In addition, two sisters from Surat have lodged separate cases against Asaram and his son for sexually assaulting them.
